So, this crazy thing happened last week, dudes. A new issue of the digital quilting magazine Make Modern came out … and MY PROJECT IS ON THE COVER. #holycrap!
Make Modern is a really fun magazine, always full of lovely, bright, modern projects. In this project for Issue 10, I combined fairly simple EPP with a touch of basic embroidery to create a project that really wows. My wall hanging is called “When The Stars Go Blue” (after this beautiful Ryan Adams’ song) and is inspired by the moment when the sky is neither day nor night, and you can just see the stars emerging. That’s my favorite time of day, it makes me feel so deeply happy and sad at the same time.
I hope you’ll go check out the issue – and my project, if you’re interested in hand-stitching! Thanks so much to Make Modern for choosing my project for the cover – it’s ridiculously exciting to see it there!
Folks, it’s time to pick a winner! Oh, the suspense is killing me!!!
#13, c’mon down!
Comment #13 was by Robin Wilkinson, who, as it happens, is a regular reader of my silly ‘ole blog – and she’s an orange peel quilt-alonger! How cool is that?! In response to my question, Robin said:
Recently I set out to wash and refold all my 2 yds or less fabric stash. I have them arranged by color and I was shocked when I finished just the brown stack (not my fave by far) and found that it contained 20 yards! Between inheirited fabric and gifted fabric and bought fabric, I estimate about 400 yards. Please don’t tell my husband!!
Woohoo, that sounds like a fabric-y treasure trove! But don’t worry, we won’t tell – your secret is safe with us. :)
Keep an eye on your email, Robin – I’ll be in touch shortly to get your prize to you! And thanks to all of you for playing along and seeing the humor in our craft-materials addiction. I promise I’ll show you my own fairly small, but beloved, stash very soon!
Out in the world, in bookstores and everything, is a book with my name in it. DUDE. That’s amazing. I know for a lot of my fellow peeps in this book, it’s old hat, but this is my first contribution ever and I’m so, so excited!
My project is a mini-quilt – or table setting / large mug rug – with a row of sweet little appliquéd hearts and contrast hand-stitching. It uses just three fat quarters, is infinitely customizable (a little extra embroidery, anyone?! That would be so cute!), and is a perfect showcase project for those absolute favorite fabrics hoarded in your stash.
“Fat Quarters” is out today in the States and on May 7th in the UK (available to pre-order via Amazon.co.uk) – but available right here on my little blog today as just one part of my spectacular Holy-Crap-I’m-in-a-Book-Giveaway!
Lark Crafts was kind enough to offer up a copy of “Fat Quarters”, which I’ve paired with a kit to make my project, for one lucky winner! That means everything above: a copy of “Fat Quarters”, three designer fat quarters*, a piece of Wonder Under fusible web, and three balls of DMC Perle Cotton – you only need two colors of perle cotton for this project, but I chose fabrics that will work well no matter how you arrange them, so I’ve included threads that do the same. You’ll only need sewing thread and a scrap of batting to make my “All My Heart Mini-Quilt”!
This giveaway is open to anyone, anywhere, because that’s how I roll, and will be chosen by random number generator. No hoops for extra entries, just leave one comment answering the following:
How big is your fabric stash – no, really?? It’s ok, we’re all friends here, we won’t tell anyone. And if not fabric, what other craft material do you stash most? What item in your stash can you not bear to use or part with?
That’s it! I’ll close the giveaway on March 27th (end of next week) and announce a winner over that weekend – go go go!
