Orange Peel Quilt-Along: First Progress Check-In

Orange Peel Quilt-Along!

Ok, peeps, time for our first progress check-in! I’m moving along at a steady, though not especially speedy, pace. I was cruising along, but had to take a detour to work on a little gift project. Now I’m back at it as my main project – out of my 144 finished blocks, here’s where I stand:

Orange Peel Quilt-Along

– 11 completed blocks
– 19 pinned for appliqué
– 20 peels basted
– 17 peels ready for basting

I can’t say exactly if I’ve met my 21-peels-per-week quota, my progress isn’t moving in such a linear fashion. It seems to make more sense for me to cut a big stack at once / spend a full evening just basting / settle in for a long stretch of appliqué. But I feel like I’m on track so far – and loving it very much. The hand-stitching is soothing, and although I worried just a touch that, after already completing one orange peel wall quilt, I’d be ready to move on before I managed to finish this one, I can’t get enough. I love matching the backgrounds to the peels in adorable combinations and watching them come together. So, basically, so far so good. This project is exactly what I need right now.

So, how are you doing with your peels? Are you enjoying it? Have you run into any problems I or the group can help with? Tell us all about it!

Oh, and before I forget – I didn’t start it myself, but a tag for this quilt-along has popped up with us Instagram users anyway! So if you’re an Instagram user and post as you work, tag your photos with #orangepeelqal2014 to share with the group. But don’t forget to share them here when we check-in, even if you’re posting elsewhere!

I have made negligible progress. I have the fabric. I’ve cut most of my squares (but I need to do a few more) and I have the template ready to go. But, that’s it. I’m hoping to at least get some freezer paper peels cut out tonight.

You fabric combos look amazing! I want to do a blue and pink quilt now.

the fabric on the peel in the upper right of your last photo is amazing!
I’ve changed my mind about fabric something like six times. I’m forcing myself to start the squares tonight so it can at least be started before I get sucked into the vortex of christmas presents.

Your fabric choices are gorgeous!!! It’s going to look really stunning. I have 6 blocks done and all the rest are pinned ready for appliqué. I’m hoping to get some more blocks finished this weekend.

Your blocks are looking fantastic! I am way behind but ready to jump in with both feet, and hopefully I’ll make up for lost time :)

love your fabric choices and you seem to have done so much. I’ve appliqued 6 squares so far, the next 6 are basted and ready to applique. I ‘m doing them in batches of 6 to reuse the freezer template, though it’s looking quite ragged already!

So, your squares are looking fab! I have 252 to do, I’ve cut all my squares, cut and basted about 165 peels and appliqués about 100, so I’ve made a good start. Still a ways to go. Not keen on pink, so a bit tired of looking at them, but think my combos look good. I’ll try to lay them out and take a picture sometime soon!
